Lindsey-Garrett Post 64

Lindsey-Garrett Post 64 of the American Legion was chartered January 19, 1925; only six years after the formation of the national American Legion organization.  The post is named after two Walton county WW1 soldiers: Broadus B Lindsey of Social Circle who died October 14, 1918, and William Grady Garrett of Campton who died October 11, 1918.

The Post 64 Legion Family is composed of members of the American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion (Squadron 64) and the Women’s Auxiliary (Unit 64).  As a small Post, around 400 members of the legion family, we need your membership so we can further the national goals of the American Legion as well as our own community efforts.  Your ideas and participation are solicited.

What is our mission?

Post 64 supports many veterans and community activities.   A partial list includes: support for the families of deployed active duty military; Veterans Day observance at Rest Haven cemetery; ceremonies at Great Oaks Senior Living facility, Walton Regional Nursing Home, and public school observances; Memorial Day ceremony at the Walton County Courthouse in Monroe, flag placement on veterans’ graves at the cemetery, and Ride for America parade; quarterly visits to the War Veterans Home in Milledgeville including cookouts and Bingo; sponsor of the Georgia Boys and Girls state programs, high school oratorical contents, scholarships, donations of flags to schools and non-profit activities; benefactor to members of the Legion and the community when disaster strikes through donations and benefit fundraisers.  Every December Squadron 64 conducts a toy drive for needy children, and we prepare and distribute over 400 fruit baskets to disabled veterans and needy families throughout Walton County. Post 64 is a member of the 10th District and Walton County Veterans Council and conducts many of our events in conjunction with those organizations.

Weekly and Annual Events

Post 64 engages in many fund raising events during the year such as Bingo, Toys for Tots and the Walton County Fair:

  •  The Post’s primary fund raising activities are: Bingo open to the public held once a week on Friday evenings at 7:30 at which Unit 64 sell refreshments.
  • A Turkey shoot sponsored by Squadron 64 in the fall.
  • The Walton County Fair held each spring at our American Legion Fairgrounds located at Church & Poplar streets.  This event is free to veterans, seniors, and children under five.  Proceeds raised are used to support the post’s activities.
  • Post 64 holds an annual Veterans and Membership Appreciation day each fall.  Each member is entitled to two barbecue plates.  All non members are encouraged to join Post 64.  Facilities open to members include a lounge open Tuesday thru Saturday and a game room.  Members receive preferential treatment for rental of the hall and soon to be barbecue pit.
  • Your membership in this post is what you make of it.  Monthly meetings are the second Monday of each month commencing at 7:30 pm.  We urge you to attend the meetings and participate in this post’s activities.
